On 29th June 1968, 41241 steamed into Worth Valley folklore, hauling the Preservation Re-opening Special in its iconic KWVR red livery. Still going strong in 2025, it's seen here powering along the GN Straight—history in motion.
The 138-year-old locomotive, originally built for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, took centre stage in the iconic 1970 feature film The Railway Children. Affectionately known as the Green Dragon, it still steams proudly towards Oakworth Station today!
Rescued by The Standard 4 Locomotive Preservation Society, the 21st departure from Barry, 75078 arrived on the KWVR in June 1972. Over 50 years later and still steaming through the Worth Valley, climbing to Oakworth with The Elf Explorer.
The Standard 4 Locomotive Society returned to Barry in 1975, and saved 78022 from the Welsh scrapyard with the locomotive arriving at Haworth on 11th of June 1975. Over 50 years later The Standard 4 Locomotive Society gifted 78022 to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.
Originally built in 1887 by Beyer Peacock & Co. Ltd. of Manchester for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, this historic locomotive rose to fame in the 1970 feature film The Railway Children. Adorned in a fictional livery for the screen, it captured hearts under its affectionate nickname, ‘The Green Dragon’, becoming a beloved symbol of British railway.heritage and classic cinema.
