Welsh Fan Corn Dolly Workshop
Corn Dolly Workshop with Angela Riley

Saturday 17 August, 2024

10am – 1pm

The aim of this workshop is for our participants to learn about the origins and history of the Corn Dolly. Then there will be the opportunity for everyone to make, and take home with them, a corn dolly, or even corn dollies. This practical workshop starts with making the traditional 3 straw plait and from there you will work your way up toward making a Welsh Fan. These are a traditional Welsh house blessing, given as a gift to promote good fortune in the house where it hung.

All our workshop participants will be required to bring with them the following items: a sharp pair of scissors and a 30cm ruler (not tape measure).

Your tutor, Angela Riley, has been actively employed in the heritage and cultural sector throughout her working life. Angela was introduced to the art of corn dolly making some 25 years ago whilst working at Church Farm Museum, Skegness and is now one of a very small group of straw plaiting tutors in the UK. Since then, she has developed and expanded the range of corn dollies she makes, including traditional variants which originated in South America, North Africa and Eastern Europe. Today, Angela works across Lincolnshire & the east Midlands and is in high demand to deliver workshops at heritage venues and events in our region.
